Linus Torvald and Linux

Linus Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland in December 18,1969. He was born into a family of journalists. In the mid-1970s, young age Linus grew upset with the few programs on his grandfather's computer so he started to create new programs for it. In 1996 Torvalds graduated from the University of Helsinki with a master's degree in computer science. He was already a programmer by the time he started going to the University of Helsinki and has been programming since. 1991 was the year that Linus had started working on Linux, his version of an operating system. Linux has proved itself to be a very useful ally in the long run, by being used by laptops, GPS systems, and even televisions. Some recent examples are the Dell Inspiron mini 11 and 9, the Garmin Nuvi 860, 880, and 5000, and the Sony Bravia Television. There are thousands of items that use the Linux operating system. There are several ways that Linux differs from the Windows and Mac operating systems. One way is that Linux costs no money at all unlike it's competitors. Another advantage is that Linux is not a full operating system. It is a kernel and has hundreds of distributions. This means that there are a lot of variations of Linux so you can find one that fits your personal need. Although Linux does have several advantages against it's rivals it also has multiple flaws. One of it's flaws is that it has a complicated layout. It takes some knowledge of computers in order to use some distributions. Another disadvantage is that it isn't as compatible as Windows and doesn't have as many programs or games. Linux computers are also less common to find. Most people buy Windows computers then reformat them to use Linux. Linus Torvalds is now the creator of a billion dollar industry and has had a big impact on the world of computers. Linus is referred to as the king of geeks for good reason. His operating system is used from Android phones, to entertainment systems, to video players. I would say that he is one of the if not the greatest programmer in the world. He has made a huge impact on the world we know today.

  1. I agree that Linux didn't have as many issues as other systems like Mac and windows. Except only people with extensive computer programming knowledge would be able to do anything with the early public version of Linux. The version numbers of Linux were getting higher and higher with the assistance of programmers that enjoyed Linux. People began writing programs specifically to be run under Linux and allowed farther development of Linux.

  2. I agree that the layout of Linux can be hard for people to use and understand. But i think Linux has also introduced GUI ' Gnome' and ' KDE' which can be used for ease of access for this operating system .

  3. With the whole thing with Linux being on a high level of intelligence I agree on that. It is not as popular as other operating systems but it still has it's varying uses in today's world. I would also have to say that I believe that Dennis is my choice for top programmer for the sole reason of he's the creator of the C language. I know this is only my opinion but it's what I believe.

  4. Linux not being compatible with many software programs is a good point. That was one of the reasons why I didn't get it on one of my computers. All of the programs i need for school i wouldn't be able to use. That's cool that Linux is used on TVs i didn't know that, i wonder how that all works.Interesting post though learned stuff that i didn't find in my research.
